Abstract

This study seeks to examine how pesantren-based madrasahs manage their competitive advantages in order to achieve sustainable education. The study focuses on two institutions, namely MA Al Ma’had An Nur and MA Asy Syifa, which are considered successful in managing pesantren-based educational systems adaptively amid changing times. From the perspective of Resource-Based Theory (RBT), sustainable competitive advantage is developed through the utilization of resources that are valuable, rare, difficult to imitate, and effectively supported by the organization. This study employs a qualitative approach using a case study design to describe and explain a particular phenomenon. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation studies. The research informants included madrasah supervisors at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, madrasah principals, educators, students, prospective parents, and members of the surrounding community. Data were analyzed through data condensation, data display, conclusion drawing, and analysis, while data validity was ensured through source and technique triangulation. The findings show that education in both madrasahs is implemented through an integrated model that combines formal madrasah education with pesantren education, encompassing intellectual, spiritual, moral, and social dimensions. Their strategic advantages are developed through the optimization of internal resources. MA Al-Ma'had An-Nur builds institutional sustainability through advantage management rooted in leadership based on traditional pesantren values, while MA Asy-Syifa' builds sustainability through modern Muhammadiyah institutional governance. Sustainability is achieved through the synergy of internal resources and the orchestration of external factors that strengthen institutional legitimacy, stability, attractiveness, and competitiveness. This study produces a conceptual model of strategic resource advantage in pesantren-based Madrasah Aliyah, explaining that institutional sustainability is not built upon a single resource, but rather through the management of various strategic resources within their respective institutional contexts. These findings extend the application of Resource-Based Theory to the field of Islamic education by demonstrating that strategic resource advantage constitutes a primary xiv mechanism for building the sustainability of pesantren-based Madrasah Aliyah. Furthermore, the findings affirm that the ability of pesantren institutions to maintain sustainability depends on their capacity to manage resources strategically and contextually. The integration of internal strengths and external support serves as a key factor in building sustainable institutional resilience. Therefore, the management model implemented by pesantren-based madrasahs can serve as a conceptual reference for the future development of other Islamic educational institutions.
