Abstract

This study was motivated by the lack of children's habituation in using polite Javanese due to the dominance of Indonesian in their daily communication. This study aims to examine the role of teachers in developing children's polite behavior through the habituation of using Javanese and to identify the supporting and inhibiting factors at TK ABA Munggang Wetan Yogyakarta. This study employed a qualitative approach with field research. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation involving the principal and classroom teachers. Data were analyzed through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification, while data validity was ensured through source and technique triangulation. The findings show that teachers act as role models, habituation facilitators, guides, motivators, and reminders. The habituation was consistently implemented through the use of polite Javanese expressions in various daily activities, accompanied by guidance and positive reinforcement when children had difficulty using appropriate language. Supporting factors included teacher cooperation, role modeling, and consistent habituation, while inhibiting factors included limited use of Javanese at home and the influence of the surrounding environment. Therefore, consistent role modeling, habituation, guidance, and reinforcement by teachers can help develop children's habit of using polite Javanese as part of their polite behavior.
