Abstract
This research was motivated by the importance of providing healthy and nutritious food for early childhood and the continued prevalence of parental practices of giving children instant food, snacks, or certain foods according to their preferences. This condition highlights the importance of the role of Posyandu cadres in building parents’ awareness of providing healthy and nutritious food for early childhood. This research aims to examine the role of Posyandu cadres in building parents’ awareness of providing healthy and nutritious food for early childhood and to identify the supporting and inhibiting factors faced by Posyandu cadres in carrying out these roles in Dlisenkulon Village. This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive research design. The research was conducted in Dlisenkulon Village, Pituruh District, Purworejo Regency. The research data sources consisted of Posyandu cadres, parents of young children, and village officials as primary data sources, as well as Posyandu documents as secondary data sources. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis involved the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, while data validity was established through technique triangulation and source triangulation. The results showed that the Tunas Bhakti Posyandu cadres in Dlisenkulon Village played several roles in building parents’ awareness, namely as information providers, educators, motivators, facilitators, and communicators. These roles were carried out through Posyandu activities, counseling sessions, direct communication, information sharing via WhatsApp, discussions, and assistance for parents. The cadres also communicated the results of children’s growth monitoring and connected parents with health workers when problems related to children’s health and nutritional needs were identified. Supporting factors in the implementation of the cadres’ roles included support from health workers or village midwives, support from the village government, the availability of Posyandu facilities and infrastructure, and parental participation. Meanwhile, inhibiting factors included limited parental knowledge, family economic conditions, children’s habits of consuming instant food or certain preferred foods, and limited variety in the educational methods used by the cadres. Therefore, continuous education and assistance, along with more intensive communication between cadres and parents, are needed to ensure that awareness of providing healthy and nutritious food can be consistently implemented.
