Abstract

Merariq is a wedding tradition performed by the people of Sasak tribe of Lombok on the basis of local belief system. The presence of Islam and the penetration of global modernity bring about changes in the procession, norms, values, practices, symbols, and social meaning. This research aims to know merariq tradition practice amid the stream of Islam and global modernity. The study also views the transformation and reconstruction processes. This qualitative research examines cases occurring in several locations in Lombok (Mataram, West Lombok, Central Lombok, East Lombok, and North Lombok). Collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, the data is analyzed under Miles and Huberman data analysis technic. While a theory of Rites of Passage of Arnold van Gennep is used to view the practice of merariq, liquid modernity theory by Zygmunt Bauman is applied for a transformation and reconstruction analysis. The study discovers that the merariq tradition is a series of wedding processions within Sasak Muslim society, carried out in three stages. First, a pre-liminal phase, which is midang procession, second, liminal phase, which comprises memulang/memalung, besebo, sejati, selabar, and ngawinan, third, post-liminal phase, which consists of begawe, sorong serah aji kerame, nyongkolan, and bales lampak nae. The values, meaning, and symbols existing in each phase are all Sasak custom-based. The presence of Islam in local culture bears normative and spiritual values, and structurally adjusts component of custom controversy to suit Islamic sharia. At this point, Islam brings about a tradition of merariq ntan agame. In addition, global modernity comes through education and technology as transformation energy to make merariq personal, independent, and legitimate decision. Education turns merariq into a tradition of merariq saq tapeq, and technology into merariq saq molah one. This research also reconstructs the merariq tradition practiced by Sasak Muslim society of Lombok into four parts (i.e. from custom to sharia, from traditional to rational, from ritual to festival, and from analog to digital). The reconstruction has made social structure and tradition meaning liquid. Therefore, merariq tradition within Sasak Muslim society nowadays is a collaboration of tradition, Islam, and global modernity into a single arena of ritual named merariq serebuk without eliminating its essence of values and meaning. It is, in fact, merely about renewal, adjustment, and modification, making merariq tradition meet sharia and contemporary era. The dynamics shows that the Sasak society of Lombok has created a new rich religious tradition, and makes the tradition survive and up-to-date.
