Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify and describe the dynamics of social identity traditional leaders of Islam Wetu Telu in Bayan, North Lombok regency. Qualitative methods are used to examine the phenomenon of Islam Wetu Telu, thus this study included field research category to describe the results of other research as a consequence of the methods applied. The theory used is social identity theory (SIT) psychological perspective, while the approach used in this study is the symbolic interactionist so the analysis is individual or personal data. Subjects in this study were traditional leaders Wetu Telu consisting of 2 (two) people, that is Pemangku gubug Karangsalah and traditional leaders of East Bayan, which then acts as a key informant in the process of data collection. The research instrument used was the interview method as the primary method and observation methods as a complementary method. Analysis of the data in this study using the interactive model analysis by Miles and Huberman, which include data reduction, presentation, and conclusions. The results of this study indicate that traditional leaders Wetu Telu tend to construct their social identity a model of multiple identities. Their identity as “Muslims” ultimately a imagined social identity. The term of Wetu Telu also contain symbolic meaning for traditional leaders depends on their subjective interpretation as a product of social interaction with outgroup. Traditional leaders of Wetu Telu also retains the traditional rites as a form of symbolic resistance to express their social identity under “pressure” Muslim majority. The results of social comparison shows the uniqueness of the group owned by Wetu Telu community the survival lighters traditional leaders as a group member. The strategy of social creativity finally selected to maintain a positive social identity, made through reinterpretation the term of Wetu Telu as a system of three elements that reflect Bayan cosmology.
