Abstract
This study examines how BAZNAS digital media construct messages of Islamic philanthropy and how muzaki and donors experience and interpret giving through digital channels. It focuses on the relationship between the visual and narrative forms of media, donors’ emotional experiences, institutional trust, and the meanings attached to zakat, infaq, sadaqah, and religiously motivated social donations as acts of worship. This study employs an interpretive-descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through observations of texts and visuals on the Instagram account @baznasindonesia, documentation of digital artifacts, and semi-structured interviews with three informants who had paid zakat or made infaq, sadaqah, or other donations through digital channels. The informants belonged to different age groups, but these differences were used to identify variations in experience rather than to represent the characteristics of particular generations. The data were analyzed thematically by examining visual mediation, religious persuasion, trust, emotional engagement, privacy, sincerity, transaction records, distribution reports, and the orientation of lillah. The findings show that BAZNAS digital media present Islamic philanthropy through visual content, humanitarian narratives, religious symbols, institutional identity, calls to action, and documentation of fund distribution. These elements provide a context through which informants recognize programs and assess institutional credibility, but they do not automatically determine decisions to give. The informants described varied experiences of trust, concern, gratitude, tranquility, doubt, and consideration of their financial capacity and the clarity of fund distribution. Digital channels may also provide greater privacy for maintaining one’s intention, while notifications, transaction records, and reports function as administrative markers that help strengthen a sense of security. This study argues that digital Islamic philanthropy constitutes a mediated practice of worship. Digital media do not eliminate the religious orientation of giving. Instead, they help shape how informants obtain information, assess institutions, experience emotions, maintain their intentions, and interpret giving in relation to God and beneficiaries.
