Abstract
The black soldier fly (BSF) is a potential insect for organic waste bioconversion and biomass production. Its larvae can utilize various organic substrates, making BSF relevant to sustainable waste management. Rice waste generated from food-service activities, including Islamic boarding schools, can potentially serve as a BSF substrate; however, its nutritional composition needs to be optimized to support larval growth and development. Moringa (Moringa oleifera) and lamtoro (Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit.) leaf powder have potential as feed supplements. This study aimed to determine the effects of different Moringa and lamtoro supplementation formulations on BSF growth and life-cycle development when reared on a rice-waste substrate. The study employed a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with six treatments and four replicates. Treatments consisted of P1 = 95% basal feed + 5% lamtoro; P2 = 95% basal feed + 5% supplementation (75% lamtoro + 25% Moringa); P3 = 95% basal feed + 5% supplementation (50% lamtoro + 50% Moringa); P4 = 95% basal feed + 5% supplementation (25% lamtoro + 75% Moringa); P5 = 95% basal feed + 5% Moringa; and P6 = 100% basal feed as the control. Parameters included larval weight, length, and life-cycle development. Growth data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA followed by DMRT or the Kruskal–Wallis test when parametric assumptions were not met, while life-cycle development was analyzed descriptively. The results showed that supplementation significantly affected larval weight but not length. P3 showed the highest weight growth among supplementation treatments and approached the control. P4 had the shortest total life cycle, at 40 days. Thus, P3 was recommended based on growth performance, while P4 showed the fastest life-cycle development.
