Abstract

PT. Danwood Nusantara is a furniture manufacturing company that still faces quality problems in its finishing process, as indicated by the high number of product defects. This study aims to identify the types of defects occurring in the production process, measure process capability based on Defects Per Million Opportunities (DPMO) and sigma level values, analyze the causes of defects, and propose improvement recommendations to enhance product quality. The research employed the Six Sigma method using the Define, Measure, Analyze, and Improve (DMAI) stages, supported by Critical to Quality (CTQ), Pareto Diagram, Fishbone Diagram, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and the 5W+1H approach. The results revealed eight types of defects in furniture products, namely door gap, color mismatch, uneven door alignment, cutter marks, saw marks, handling defects, veneer chipping, and veneer blistering. Based on Pareto analysis, four dominant defects were identified as the main priorities for improvement: door gap (29.8%), color mismatch (29.4%), uneven door alignment (19.6%), and veneer blistering (8.0%), contributing cumulatively 86.9% of the total defects. The measurement results showed an average Defects Per Million Opportunities (DPMO) value of 57,393.9 and an average sigma level of 3.03, indicating that the production process capability is still not optimal. The FMEA analysis identified five priority factors requiring improvement: jigs that were unable to hold material positions properly, the absence of quality control (QC) in the sub-assembly area, improper adhesive application techniques, uneven wooden pallet supports, and an insufficient drying line length. Based on these findings, improvement recommendations were focused on periodic jig inspection and maintenance, standardization of adhesive application techniques, routine pallet inspections, drying line optimization, and the addition of quality supervision in the sub-assembly area. The implementation of these recommendations is expected to reduce product defects and improve the capability of the furniture production process in a sustainable manner.
