Abstract
The application of Formed-In-Place Gasket (FIPG) using a robotic machine requires appropriate process parameter settings to produce a consistent sealant bead diameter within the specified limits. Improper parameter settings can cause diameter variation, increase the risk of process failure, and lead to material waste during machine setup. This study aims to identify the effects of pump pressure, robot speed, and nozzle height on sealant bead diameter, determine the optimum combination of process parameters, and evaluate process capability under the optimum conditions. The Taguchi method with an L9 Orthogonal Array was employed using the Nominal is Best quality characteristic. The experiment used sealant with a viscosity of 75 Pa.s and an SNA-15G nozzle with an internal diameter of 1.43 mm. The investigated factors consisted of pump pressures of 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 MPa; robot speeds of 50, 75, and 100 mm/s; and nozzle heights of 1, 1.5, and 2 mm. The Signal-to-Noise Ratio analysis showed that pressure was the most dominant factor, with a delta value of 12.047, followed by nozzle height at 7.641 and robot speed at 7.101. Based on the means analysis, pressure was also the most dominant factor, with an ANOVA contribution of 53.48%. The optimum process parameter combination was obtained at a pressure of 0.1 MPa, a robot speed of 100 mm/s, and a nozzle height of 2 mm, with a predicted S/N Ratio of 23.5566 and a predicted mean bead diameter of 1.11847 mm. Furthermore, process capability analysis under the optimum conditions resulted in a Cp value of 3.95 and a Cpk value of 2.28, indicating that the process has a very high capability to meet the specified limits. The results demonstrate that the Taguchi method can be used to determine an optimum combination of process parameters, while process capability analysis can be used to evaluate the stability and capability of the robotic sealant application process.
