Abstract
Volcanic ash from Mount Merapi is an abundant material, however its utilization in Indonesia remains limited. In terms of its chemical composition, volcanic ash contains aluminosilicate compounds and various metal axides, have the potential to be developed as heterogeneous catalyst candidate. This study aimed to characterize the chemical composition and textural properties of Mount Merapi volcanic ash as a basis for evaluating its potential as a heterogeneous catalyst. The chemical composition was characterized using Wavelength Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (WD-XRF), while the specific surface area, pore volume, and pore size distribution were analyzed using a Surface Area Analyzer (SAA) based on nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) methods. The WD-XRF analysis showed that Mount Merapi volcanic ash was predominantly composed of SiO2 (37,9%) and Al2O3 (8,61%), which constitute the aluminosilicate framework, along with CaO (4,75%), Fe2O3 (4,58%), and K2O (3,59%). These results indicate the presence of significant amounts of alkaline, alkaline-earth, and transition metal oxides, with a SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratio of 7,47. The Surface Area Analyzer results showed a multipoint BET surface area of 0,4720 m2/g, with a pore structure dominated by mesopores according to the IUPAC classification. The adsorption-desorption isotherm was classified as Type IV with an H3-type hysteresis loop. The combination of aluminosilicate components, alkaline and alkaline-earth metal oxides, and transition metal oxides such as Fe2O3 suggests that Mount Merapi volcanic ash may exhibit acidic, basic and redox catalytic properties. Therefore, Mount Merapi volcanic ash warrants further investigation as a potential heterogeneous catalyst for aubsequent studies.
