Abstract

Identification of components in a homogeneous solid mixture system is an analytical challenge because of the similarity of the functional groups of citric acid and tartaric acid. This results in overlapping FTIR spectra, making visual identification difficult. This study aims to identify the characteristics of the spectral profiles of the constituent components in the functional group and fingerprint regions, analyze changes in the spectral patterns of homogeneous solid mixtures in controlled variations and the ability of Multivariate Curve Resolution (MCR) in separating the constituent components, and evaluate the success of MCR decomposition through cosine similarity values to the pure reference spectra. The study was conducted by analyzing FTIR spectra in the wavenumber range of 4000-650 cm-1 of pure samples and homogeneous solid mixtures in sample A, sample B, and sample C, with citric acid and tartaric acid ratios of 1:2, 2:2, and 2:1 respectively. The analysis was carried out with an initial guess approach and without an initial guess. The results showed that the absorption band characteristics of pure citric acid and tartaric acid were consistent with the reference data, with the fingerprint region proving more sensitive and discriminatory than the main functional group region in distinguishing the two compounds. The mixture spectra consistently followed the composition without significant wavenumber shifts. The evaluation of MCR decomposition success showed LOF values ranging from 1.09%-5.71% with an R2 of 0.9967-0.9999, as well as the best cosine similarity values obtained with the initial guess approach in the fingerprint region of ≥0.98 for tartaric acid and ≥0.95 for citric acid, confirming that the MCR method is accurate for component analysis of homogeneous solid mixture systems.
