Abstract

This study aims to analyze the transformation of perceptions among the indigenous community of Siru Village, Lembor District, West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, regarding the position and role of women in the patrilineal customary inheritance system. Within this system, sons are positioned as the primary heirs, while women are regarded as ata pe'ang (outsiders) who forfeit their inheritance rights upon marriage. However, advances in education, religious influence, and cross-cultural social interaction have begun to shift the community's perspective on women's rights within the family. This study employs a qualitative approach using the phenomenological method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with young people (both female and male), customary leaders, religious figures, and village officials. Analysis was conducted integratively, drawing on Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann's Social Construction theory, Selo Soemardjan's Social Change theory, and Amina Wadud's Islamic Feminist Theology perspective. The findings reveal that (1) the inheritance system in Siru Village remains dominated by patrilineal customary norms that position men as the primary heirs; (2) women occupy a marginal position and are excluded from deliberations on the distribution of inheritance; (3) a gradual transformation of perceptions is underway, marked by the emergence of critical attitudes among women and a growing acceptance of Islamic values as an alternative framework for inheritance distribution; and (4) this transformation is driven by three key factors education, religious teachings, and cross-cultural social interaction all of which broaden community awareness of the possibility of a more equitable inheritance system. The study further demonstrates that social change within indigenous communities does not always unfold through direct confrontation with tradition, but rather through a process of value negotiation among customary norms, religious principles, and lived social experience.
