Abstract

Quarter Life Crisis is a psychological phenomenon commonly experienced by individuals in early adulthood and is characterized by confusion, anxiety, uncertainty, and pressure in dealing with various developmental demands, such as completing higher education, planning a career, managing interpersonal relationships, and determining future life directions. Master's students are among the groups most vulnerable to experiencing this condition due to the complex academic demands they face, including thesis completion and the transition into the professional workforce. The ability to implement effective coping strategies is therefore an essential factor in helping individuals manage psychological distress and adapt effectively to the challenges they encounter. This study aims to describe the coping strategies employed by master's students at Yogyakarta State University in dealing with Quarter Life Crisis. The research employed a qualitative approach using a case study method. The participants consisted of two master's students at Yogyakarta State University who experienced Quarter Life Crisis and were selected through purposive sampling based on the characteristics of the phenomenon under investigation. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation. Data trustworthiness was established through technique triangulation and source triangulation, while data analysis followed the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, consisting of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that both participants employed two forms of coping strategies, namely problem-focused coping and emotion-focused coping. Although both participants utilized similar types of coping strategies, differences emerged in their implementation patterns. Participant AA primarily relied on self-reflection as the main mechanism for managing psychological distress, whereas participant BB optimized social support as the primary source of strength throughout the coping process. The findings indicate that the combination of problem-focused coping and emotion-focused coping contributes to reducing psychological distress, enhancing adaptive capacity, and fostering a more positive perspective toward Quarter Life Crisis as a developmental process leading to adulthood. Furthermore, the results highlight the importance of developing adaptive coping strategies through psychological, social, and spiritual support to assist master's students in navigating the challenges of the transition to early adulthood more effectively.
