Abstract

This study examines the cultural communication of Ninik Mamak in preserving Minangkabau cultural values through the Alek Batagak Pangulu ceremony of the Koto Karambia clan, Nagari Magek, Agam Regency. The study is confounded by cultural shifts caused by globalization and modernization, which have contributed to declining understanding among younger generations in customs. The research problem focuses on how Ninik Mamak communicate and preserve Minangkabau cultural values through Alek Batagak Pangulu. This study uses Cultural Communication Theory and Value Theory, analyzing cultural communication through four elements: value systems, norms, symbols, and meanings, within three levels of Minangkabau adat: adat nan sabana adat, adat nan diadatkan, and adat nan taradatkan. A descriptive qualitative method was employed. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, with informants selected using purposive and snowball sampling and data validated through triangulation. The findings show that Ninik Mamak preserve values of deliberation, mutual cooperation, responsibility, and respect for adat through customary speeches, petatah-petitih, advice, and exemplary conduct. Norms are maintained through Islamic teachings, customary agreements, and practices. Symbols represent authority, responsibility, protection, and legitimacy. Alek Batagak Pangulu signifies leadership, unity, responsibility, and respect for adat, although youth understanding of customary symbols remains challenged by modernization.
