Abstract

This study examines inter-surah munasabah in the 30th juz of the Qur’an (Juz ‘Amma) as interpreted by M. Quraish Shihab Tafsir al-Misbah Volume 15. The study departs from a significant academic gap: although discourse on munasabah within Tafsir al-Misbah has been extensively conducted, no research has yet comprehensively and systematically examined its application across the entirety of Juz 30 while simultaneously analysing the underlying methodology. The selection of Juz 30 is grounded in the consideration that this juz contains the largest number of surahs in the Qur’an, the majority of which are Meccan (Makkiyyah), and presents fundamental themes including creedal doctrine (‘aqidah), eschatology, and ethics (akhlaq) that constitute the pillars of faith. This research aims: first, to identify the patterns of inter-surah munasabah in Juz 30 as elaborated in Tafsir al-Misbah ; and second, to analyse M. Quraish Shihab’s methodology in constructing and explicating such coherence. This research is qualitative in nature, employing a descriptive-analytical approach through library research. The primary data source is Tafsir al-Misbah Volume 15 by M. Quraish Shihab, while secondary sources encompass both classical and contemporary works of ‘ulum al-Qur’an as well as relevant prior scholarship. Data collection was carried out through documentary analysis of the text of Tafsir al-Misbah Volume 15, subsequently processed through successive stages of reduction, thematic categorisation, and critical inference. The findings reveal five inter-surah munasabah patterns in Tafsir al-Misbah Juz 30. First, the coherence between the opening exposition of a surah and its closing. Second, munasabah between the opening of a surah and the conclusion of the preceding surah. Third, munasabah between the theme and purpose of a surah’s name. Fourth, munasabah between the closing of a surah and the opening (muqaddimah) of the subsequent surah. Fifth, munasabah between surahs. Methodologically, Quraish Shihab applies three distinguishing characteristics: first, presenting the view of al-Biqā’ī, bringing it into dialogue with other mufassirun such as Ibn ‘Āshūr and Sayyid Quṭb, and then establishing his own position; second, identifying the principal objective (maqṣad) of each surah as the key to constructing inter-surah relations; and third, acknowledging that munasabah analysis is ijtihādī in nature, not qaṭ’ī. This study demonstrates that Tafsir al-Misbah is not merely a rendering of the classical tradition, but constitutes an original scholarly contribution that bridges the science of munasabah inherited from al-Biqā’ī with the contemporary Muslim reader, while affirming the organic unity of the Qur’an as a single, coherent divine message.
