Abstract

Gay shipping has become a part of K-pop fan culture, including the “Nomin” ship promoted by the J fanbase on the X app. Fans pair two NCT Dream members Jeno and Jaemin, or “Nomin” as a romantic couple and express their imagination through various activities, such as writing fanfiction, creating fan art, editing videos, and sharing moments of the two together on social media. This phenomenon is worth examining because there is a discrepancy between the prevailing social, cultural, and religious values and norms in Indonesian society and the reality that gay shipping activities are still carried out by Muslim fans. This study aims to identify the motives and meanings behind gay shipping activities among Muslim NCTzens who are members of the “J” fanbase on the X app. This study employs a qualitative research method with a phenomenological approach. Data sources were obtained through in-depth interviews with members of the “J” fanbase who served as research informants, posts and activities on the fanbase and the informants’ personal accounts on the X app, as well as supporting literature such as books, journals, scientific articles, and relevant prior research. The data analysis technique employed Creswell’s phenomenological analysis, which involves describing the phenomenon, identifying key statements, grouping statements into themes, constructing a textural description, constructing a structural description, and combining the textural and structural descriptions to derive the essence of the phenomenon. Subsequently, the analysis results were interpreted using Alfred Schutz’s theory of social phenomenology. The research findings indicate that all informants were already familiar with K-pop before engaging in gay shipping, and some of them had prior experience shipping same-sex pairings involving other idols. These experiences played a role in influencing their involvement in gay shipping practices within J’s fanbase. The motivational goals for engaging in gay shipping include seeking entertainment and enjoyment, fulfilling emotional needs, and building friendships. Meanwhile, the causal motives for engaging in gay shipping include a preference for boys’ love, experiences of jealousy, curiosity, peer influence, and more intense interactions. Objectively, gay shipping is defined as the act of pairing two idols as a romantic couple. However, each informant has a subjective interpretation of gay shipping, including viewing it as non-monotonous entertainment, a form of resistance against gender stereotypes, and a form of resistance against heteronormative views. These differences in interpretation are influenced by the informants’ individual “stock of knowledge,” which is shaped by their respective experiences.
