Abstract

This interfaith gathering at the Gereja Hati Kudus Tuhan Yesus di Ganjuran is a Javanese cultural tradition adapted by the church as a meeting space for people different faiths. Through this tradition, leaders from state- recognized religions and the Penghayat Kepercayaan (indigeneous faith) community gather in a joint action without losing their respective identities. This research aims to analyze the process of forming a new identity among people of different faiths, as well as to examine the meaning of the symbols and cultural forms present within the interfaith kenduri tradition. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method utilizing Herbert Blumer’s symbolic interactionism approach. Data were collected through limited participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentatiton. The results of this study indicate that the meanings of symbols in the interfaith kenduri are formed through social interaction and are collectively interpreted by the participants. Symbols such as interfaith prayers, the distribution of berkat (blessed food) in besek (woven bamboo boxes), the use of the Javanese language, and the equal seating arrangement of religious leaders are interpreted as manifestations of respect, kinship, and mutual acceptance of diversity. This research also found that active and dialogical interactions predominantly occur among religious leaders, whereas the attending public participates more passively through their physical presence, attitudes of mutual respect, and general involvement in the series of interfaith kenduri events. Nevertheless, the Javanese cultural traditions adapted within the interfaith kenduri successfully shape a collective identity of a peacefully coexisting society, demonstrating that local culture can serve as an effective medium for building harmony among people of different faiths.
