Abstract
As social media becomes an increasingly central part of daily life, Generation Z's pursuit of emotional closeness is no longer confined to real-world relationships but has extended into the digital sphere, including through Parasocial Relationships with media figures. For individuals with Insecure Attachment to their primary attachment figures, the unmet need for emotional closeness may be redirected toward digital spaces. However, the extent to which Insecure Attachment influences Parasocial Relationships, and the role of Social Media Consumption Intensity in this relationship, remains unclear. This study aims to examine the influence of Insecure Attachment on Parasocial Relationships, with Social Media Consumption Intensity as a mediating variable, among Generation Z. This study used a quantitative method with a mediation regression design. The subjects were Indonesian Generation Z individuals selected through the heuristic sampling technique, with a total sample of 186 participants. The instruments used were the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA) Scale to measure Insecure Attachment, the MPSR Scale to measure Parasocial Relationships, and the Social Media Use Integration Scale (SMUIS) to measure Social Media Consumption Intensity. The data analysis technique used was mediation regression analysis with the bootstrapping method (5,000 bootstrap samples) using Jamovi software. The results showed a significant indirect effect of Insecure Attachment on Parasocial Relationships through Social Media Consumption Intensity (estimate = - 0.0589; p = .030), while the direct effect was not significant (estimate = -0.0685; p = .189), indicating a full/indirect-only mediation model. The results further showed that Insecure Attachment had a negative effect on Social Media Consumption Intensity, while Social Media Consumption Intensity had a positive effect on Parasocial Relationships. This study offers new insight that insecure attachment in real-world relationships does not always drive individuals to actively seek escape into digital spaces, and underscores the importance of fostering secure attachment and healthy social media use patterns among Generation Z.
