Abstract
Early marriage is a marriage entered into by a child or adolescent under the age of 19, which, under Indonesian law, is the minimum age for marriage for both men and women. Cases of early marriage often cause conflict in society because, in addition to violating marriage laws, they are also inconsistent with the developmental stages a child or adolescent should be going through. This situation forces those involved in early marriage to adjust to married life at a younger age, especially if the individual is a man who serves as the head of the household and is responsible for providing for his family. This study aims to describe the marital adjustments of adolescent males who have entered into early marriages. The study’s informants consisted of three individuals who had entered into early marriages in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The method used was a qualitative case study approach, with data collected through interviews and observation. The results of this study show that marital adjustment among adolescent males who marry early is not always adaptive; it is dynamic and develops gradually. Marital adjustment is also influenced by marital experiences, psychological conditions, social support, and adaptation to marital roles. Pre-marital preparations also determine the level of difficulty in adjusting to married life. Factors such as mental readiness, awareness of developmental tasks and roles within marriage, financial readiness, and family support significantly influence the adjustment of adolescents who marry at a young age. Overall, married adolescent males possess the adaptive capacity to adjust to married life and receive social support from their families, even when facing numerous obstacles.
