Abstract

Child sexual exploitation remains a serious issue in Indonesia, with increasing cases annually. Victims experience significant physical and psychological trauma requiring appropriate recovery processes. This study examines how interpersonal communication between companions and victims facilitates trauma recovery after child sexual exploitation at the Embun Pelangi Foundation in Batam City. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through in-depth interviews with four companions and one expert practitioner, along with documentation studies. The findings reveal that interpersonal communication functions as a primary foundation in trauma recovery across three stages: establishing safety, remembrance and mourning, and reconnection (Herman's trauma recovery framework). Each of DeVito's five interpersonal communication functions was identified: to learn (understanding traumatic experiences and emotions), to relate (building trusting relationships), to influence (reshaping victims' self-perception), to play (creating safe interactions through activities), and to help (providing emotional and practical support). This research contributes to communication studies by demonstrating that trauma-informed interpersonal communication, characterized by empathy, consistency, non-judgmental attitude, and respect for victims' readiness, is essential for recovery. The findings are relevant for companion institutions and policymakers in developing more effective, sustainable child protection programs.
