Abstract
Fishing communities in Muncar District, Banyuwangi Regency, face life pressures including unpredictable catches, safety risks, economic hardship, and the seasonal downturn known as paceklik, affecting family life and inner well-being. To cope, the community draws upon spiritual resources cultivated within their personal, family, and communal lives. This study aims to describe the application of spiritual coping strategies, analyze the meanings derived from these experiences, and formulate a model of spiritual coping within this fishing community. This qualitative study used Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), involving four participants, three boat owners and one spiritual figure selected via purposive sampling. Data were collected through observation and in-depth semi-structured interviews, with validity ensured through method and source triangulation. Analysis proceeded through transcript reading, exploratory note-taking, theme development for each participant, and cross-participant comparison. Findings show that spiritual coping is implemented through five complementary forms: at the individual level, through ikhtiar-tawakkal and consistent worship practices; at the dyadic level, through marital resilience between husband and wife; and at the communal level, through visits to kyai and collective traditions. These practices foster religious meaning-making in fishermen's lived experiences. All five forms fulfill the principles of indigenous counseling, with petik laut as a distinctive hallmark of the Muncar fishing community. Based on these findings, the study formulates a cyclical Tiered Spiritual Coping Model comprising input, activity, output, and outcome, reflecting the integration of spirituality, rationality, and collective well-being, the interconnection between humans and nature, and intergenerational transmission. These findings provide a foundation for developing contextual indigenous counseling tailored to fishing communities.
