Abstract

This research was motivated by the importance of Islamic education that is oriented not only toward the transfer of religious knowledge but also toward the actualization of Qur’anic values in students’ daily lives. This study aims to analyze the construction of Living Qur’anic values as a foundation of Islamic education, describe their actualization through Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning and boarding school life, and analyze their implications for the development of students’ Islamic character. The study employs the theoretical framework of values education, Thomas Lickona’s character education theory (moral knowing, moral feeling, and moral action), as well as the Islamic education concepts of Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas and Abdullah Nashih Ulwan as analytical frameworks. This research employed a qualitative approach using a case study design at SMPIT Luqman Hakim Indonesia Yogyakarta. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving the principal, vice principal, teachers, musyrif/musyrifah (boarding school mentors), and students. The data were analyzed using an interactive model consisting of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing, and were validated through source triangulation, technique triangulation, member checking, and chain of evidence. The findings indicate that: (1) the Living Qur’anic values at SMPIT LHI comprise the values of tawhid (monotheism), istiqamah (steadfastness), ihsan (excellence), scholarly orientation, amanah (trustworthiness), and Islam as a way of life, which are internalized through the dimensions of faith, worship, morality, and social conduct; (2) their actualization takes place through a structured process of transformation, internalization, and actualization, five complementary character-building programs, thereby forming a “Qur’anic Education Ecosystem”; and (3) this process has implications for students’ Islamic character across three dimensions, namely spiritual character, manifested in an awareness of independent worship that develops progressively according to the type of worship; personal character, manifested in self-awareness and responsibility that are still developing; and social character, manifested in mutual reminders and peer role modeling as consistent outcomes. Theoretically, this research contributes a conceptual construction of the “Qur’anic Education Ecosystem,” defined as an educational system that integrates curriculum, learning, school culture, boarding school life, role modeling, habituation, mentoring, and character evaluation. Practically, this construction can serve as a reference for developing models of Islamic character formation in boarding school-based educational institutions.
