Abstract

This study is motivated by the gap between the ideal concept of a sakinah family as presented in the Qur'an and the reality of contemporary Muslim family life, which faces various challenges such as marital conflicts, poor communication, and increasing divorce rates. These conditions indicate that the understanding of the meaning of a sakinah family is often limited. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the concept of a sakinah family according to M. Quraish Shihab in Tafsir Al-Misbah, to examine the meaning of sakinah in family life, and to explore its relevance to contemporary Muslim families. This research using a qualitative approach. The primary source of data is Tafsir Al-Misbah by M. Quraish Shihab, while the secondary data are obtained from the Qur'an, Hadith, books of tafsir, academic books, scholarly journals, and other relevant literature. Data were collected through documentation studies and analyzed using a descriptive-analytical method by examining and comparing various sources related to the concept of a sakinah family. The findings reveal that a sakinah family, according to M. Quraish Shihab, is founded upon three essential elements: sakinah, mawaddah, and rahmah. Sakinah refers to inner peace achieved through faith, effective communication, balanced roles, and shared responsibilities between husband and wife. Mawaddah is understood as love expressed through commitment and concrete actions, while rahmah represents compassion that fosters empathy, care, and self-sacrifice within the family. These three elements complement one another in establishing a harmonious, happy, and Qur'an-based family, and they remain highly relevant as guiding principles for Muslim families in addressing the challenges of modern life.
