Abstract

In this article, the writer concentrates his study on tracing the track of corruption in the early period of Islam, i.e., the time of the prophet. The questions posed here denote the possibility of existence of any kind of corruption practice in that period, and how the prophet dealt with it. Because the early Islamic society in the Prophet’s time was a civilized and, to same extent, well-organized society that had a system of political power and financial resources for running it, it is possible to say that the practice of corruption can be found in the Islamic society of the prophet’s time. Using hadith data and the methodology of ‘ulum al-hadith, the writer comes to a conclusion that the practice of corruption occurred in connection to the state’s financial sources such as ganimah and zakah, and its form comprised acting treacherously toward the ganimah and zakah, and receiving gift in connection to the position held. The prophet himself gave much attention to the problem of corruption in his society and dealt with it through strengthening moral and religious consciousness of the society on the one hand, and on the other hand, raising the control over the state’s functionaries and calling them to account for carrying out their duties in the end of their position period.
