Abstract
There are three epistemological systems of Arab thought in the classical period. Al-Jabiri called them the system of indication or explication (Bay&n), the system of illumination or gnosticism (Irf&n), and the system of demonstration or inferential evidence (Burhan). Historically, Burhan is the earliest within Arab thought. It became dominant in the so-called indigenous sciences: philology, jurisprudence and legal sciences (fiqh), Qur'anic sciences, and dialectical theology (kalam). Irfan is based upon what is termed "inner revelation and insight" as an epistemological method. These practices include Suftsm and Shi'i thought. Irfan as epistemological system also based upon the dichotomy of the obvious or manifest (zhahir) and esoteric or latent (bdthin). Finally, the epistemological system of demonstration (Bayan) based on inferential evidence, having its origins in Greek thought, especially Aristotle. This article is intended to discuss more about these three epistemological systems of Arab thought and their implication in islamic education.
