Abstract

This research analyzes the possibility of incorporating critical pedagogy in the realm of Islamic education. This is part of efforts to introduce critical theory and critical pedagogy in the sphere of Islamic education. The current development of social science shows that the exclusiveness of particular discipline does no longer exist. The main intention of this research is to make the discursive practices of Islamic education place more emphasis on historical-empirical issues instead of normative ones, arguing that the discursive practices of Islamic education developed by Muslim thinkers from the early ninth century until modern times had rarely touched the issues of oppression, difability, class, injustice, empowerment, and the like, as foregrounds of their vision and vocabularies. Some issues that are discussed in this paper are (a) Islamic education as political activity; (b) developing critical consciousness; (c) Islamic education as a productive force; and (d) language of critique and language of possibility. The dissemination of critical perspective to the realm of Islamic education has mission to locate the Islamic educational institutions as sites that perpetuate a productive force instead of a reproductive one.
