Abstract

IAIN Sunan Kalijaga had transformed into UIN Sunan Kalijaga based on the Indonesian Republic Presidential Decree Number 50 of2404 on June 21, 2004. The change has an implication in establishment oftwofaculties; Faculty ofSocial Science and Humanities and Faculty ofScience and TechnoIogy. The emerge ofthose twofaculties raisedapolemic and restlessfor academic community based on experiences ofthe Islamic University ofIndonesia and Muhammadiyah University ofYogyakarta with a dichotomy between Religious Sciences and General Sciences being twofaculties thatfinally tnake the existence ofthe religious Faculty undermined. Indicatorsfor thepolemic and restless rise almost every academic year where theprospective students who choose a Study Program/Department are not comparable between the Study Program/Department at the Religious Faculty and General Faculty. To overcome theproblem, eachfaculty establish a Socialization Team, especially the Religious Faculty which always minus on herprospective new students. Focus ofthe sludy is on how the socialization pattern ofthe Faculty of Religion as a "minus "faculty and the General Faculty as a "plus "faculty in recruiting their prospective new students by using a Public Relations principles approach. Methods in collecting data were done by observation; interview; documentation anddata analysis was done by a qualitative descriptive analyzes. Before analyzing data it was done a data validity test by using a source triangulation technique and research methods. The Faculty ofReligion made a socialization team ofthefaculty which was given a full authority to make the socialization activities. Various programs were done by spending a bigfund sourcedfrom thefaculty. The Faculty ofReligion has a surplus thing that was located on a marketable Study Program/ Department. For example the Study Program ofKUI at the Syari 'ah Faculty and the Study Program/Department ofKPI at the Dakwah (Missionary endeavor) Faculty. The Tarbiyah (Educational) Faculty has a Study Program/ Department ofPAI that always make the prospective new students are interested in them, especially after the issue ofthe Law on Teacher No. 14 of 2045. The socialization activities ofthe General Faculty were done simply by distributingpamphlets to theprospective new students. Ofthe Public Relations perspeclive, different to the General Faculty, the Faculty ofReligion aware ofafactfrom thefactfinding then made aplanning and did communication activities and made evaluation maximally. Nevertheless, recruitment through an entry testfor the UIN was done through a National SPMB andfrom a Local SPBM where a target to get the prospective new students at the Study Programs/Departments at the Faculty ofReligion never been reached. For the reason, beside improvementfor internal study Program/Department it should be better ifthe socialization done maximally and it should be thought about a breakthrough for the entry system for the prospective new studentsfor the next academicyear.
