Abstract

The industry of private radios has moved into a fierce competitive atmosphere nowadays, such as between Geronimo and Swaragama radio. Both of them having a potential for competing each other because they has several similarity that will affect on the broadcast programs they make. Appealing programs (broadcasting content) will attract a lot of audience and the radio can get a lot of revenue by the incoming radio advertisements, which in turn will help on getting more audiences. Dimmick and Rothenbuhler stated that there are 3 primary sources for sustaining the life of media industry, which are types of capital (revenue from advertisements, for instance), types of content (the type of media’s subject matter), and types of audience (the type of target audience). This means that the competition between media is, in its essence, the competition for those 3 resources. The life-sustaining sources are the reason a radio station can keep exist (on the air). A radio station needs broadcasting programs to fill the time available broadcast. This research will study the radio broadcasting programs (type of content). To discover the competition level of broadcasting program between Geronimo radio and Swaragama radio, this research will use the application of Niche theory. Niche theory is used to measure the media’s competition level by couting the size of its niche (niche breadt and niche overlap). The result from the measurement, both niche breadth (NB) and niche overlap (NO), shown that there is competition of broadcasting programs between Geronimo radio and Swaragama radio. This statement indicated by public discussion volume’s NO (0,01), public discussion frequency’s NO (0,01), broadcasting program volume’s based on type representation NO (0,001) and broadcasting program volume’s NO (0,02) and frequencys’s based on time representation NO (0,04). On the other hand, NB indicated that both radio have a dependency on several supporting resources. Geronimo radio is having generalist trait on infotainment, music broadcasting programs and broadcasting program based on type representation. while Swaragama radio is having generalist trait on information, news as well as public discussion broadcasting programs and broadcasting program based on time representation.
