Abstract

This study was aimed to determine the effect of leadership style on employee motivation in the Office of Library Archives and Documentation of Sukoharjo. This study is survey using a quantitative approach. The variable in this study is the leadership style variable (the independent variable) and employee motivation (dependent variable). This study used questionnaires, and documentation as data collecting method. The data was analyzed using product moment correlation and simple linear regression and processed using SPSS version 17 for windows. The results showed that leadership style has a positive and significant relationship and also affected the employees motivation in the Office of Library Archives and Documentation of Sukoharjo. The results was shown by the correlation value obtained for 0,639 with significance level of 0,001 > 0,05 (5%). The leadership style in the Office of Library Archives and Documentation of Sukoharjo is a democratic leadership style, which is proved by the results of the the grand mean of 3,33 with very good answer as the conclusion. The employees motivation to work in the Office of Library Archives and Documentation of Sukoharjo can be categorized as very well with the grand mean of 3,36. By looking at the test result of simple linear regression coefficient of the effect of leadership style on employees’ motivation in the Office of Library Archives and Documentation of Sukoharjo, it can be predicted that Y = 19,671 + 0,527 X with Y (employee motivation) and X (leadership style). Constant of 19,671 means if there is no improvement in the leadership style of employees motivation of 19,671, while the regression coefficient of 19,671 means any additional appropriate leadership style (+ sign) will increase employees motivation by 0,527. The result of coefficient determination (R square) is 0,408. It means that the leadership style variables cannot explain the employees motivation by 40,8%. It can be interpreted that 59,2% of employees motivation is influenced by the factors beyond leadership style which was not examined yet.
