Abstract

This research aims to describe the students’ reading interest both boy and girl, know the different reading interest calculation between boy and girl students in the library of State Junior High School 4 Yogyakarta. This research uses quantitative method. The collecting data method that used is questioner, documentation, observation, and interview method. The taking sample method uses proportionate stratified random sampling, with 77 respondents. Analysis data technique uses independent sample t-test and data is arranged by using SPSS version 20. Therefore the result shows that the reading interest of girl students is higher than boy students, however there is no significant differences between both reading interest in the library of State Junior High School 4 Yogyakarta. The condition of boys’ reading interest categorized into good, condition with average value 2.82 with the highest sub variable that is for the purpose of reading reach 3.21 and the lowest sub variable is that for the obstacle of reading reach mean value until 2.40. The condition of girls’ reading interest in the library of state Junior high school 4 Yogyakarta categorized into good condition too with average value 2.85 with the highest sub variable is that for the purpose of reading reach mean value until 3.37 and the lowest sub variable is that for the obstacle of reading reach mean value until 2.34. The suggestion from the researcher for the library is to increase the newest collections that could entertain the students such as fiction collection including (novel and comic), and the interesting children book. Activate the special schedule that have made in order to increase students’ reading interest, especially boy students. The librarians need to increase book collections by asking the student to give recommended book list relate to their interests in order to increase their reading interest in the school library.
