Abstract

This research analyses the first stage user education for undergraduate students of 2012/2013 academic year in Atma Jaya Yogyakarta University Library. It aims mainly to understand the effectiveness of the program. This research is a qualitative research applying descriptive method. The population of the research are 2113 undergraduate students of Atma Jaya Yogyakarta University in 2012/2013 academic year who have passed the first stage user education. Thus, the samples are calculated by the researcher using non probability sampling technique, especially by applying Bilson Simamora’s formula. From the calculation, there are 95 respondents who are chosen incidentally by the researcher. The variable of this research is single variable. The main data are collected by distributing questionnaire which applies likert scale of five alternative answers. Meanwhile, the supporting data are collected from the interview and documentation. For validation, the instrument is given to 30 undergraduate students of Atma Jaya University in 2012/2013 academic year. By applying correlation technique of product moment by Pearson with 5% significant level, the r value is decided 0.374, and the research instrument is proven valid. However, for instrument reliability test, the researcher applies Alpha Cronbach formula. Thus, the alpha is decided 0.956 > 0.60, therefore the instrument is reliable. Furthermore, grand mean formula is used to decide the effectiveness of the first stage user education. The result of the research shows that the effectiveness score of first stage user education is 3.86. Thus, the program is categorized effective. By considering the indicator with the lowest score which is the indicator of the users’ interest to the digital collection which only get 3.32 score, the researcher suggests the staffs of user education to actively socialize the digital collection in Atma Jaya University Library.
