Abstract

A healthy and clean environment can not be separated from the role of dustman who has contributed subtainlly in cleaning and collecting garbage. However, several person underestimated their work. Dustman categorized as marginal groups because its presence is often overlooked and often difficult to use public access such as, health, education and social activities. Also the cost of living in the city which is too expensive to demand therefore they are difficult to fulfill basic needs of daily such as food and clothing. The research problem to describe the forms of social capital as well as the growing use of social capital among the garbage man as a survival strategy. This study used descriptive qualitative methods or field research to describe the state of the subject / object of study based on the facts that appear or as they are (fact finding). Method of data collection are done by unstructure interview, observation and documentation. The collected data was then analyzed by reducing the data, display the data, and draw conclusions. The result in this research showed that social capital is growing among dustman in Nologaten TPS is the social capital of trust in cooperation, and a sense of shared kinship, mutual aid and rescue as well as social network implemented into a social institution in the form of Association Punokawan . Furthermore, Punokawan Society are savings and loan activities, social gatherings, and selfhelp social activities, accident compensation, death benefits, volunteer activities and other that have benefits to the life survival strategy of the dustman. In the future as an attempt improve the welfare and effectiveness of the performance of dustman need to a review the retribution costs increase by considering socio economic dustman conditions and need to determine dustman health insurance by the Government of Sleman district for the dustman at risk of disease because of garbage.
