Abstract

Toshihiko Izutsu’s offering of using method of semantic analysis in Al-Qur’an should be positively responded in the vast queasiness and awareness on the significance of transplantation in modern linguistic theories in more inclusive “reading” toward Al-Qur’an. Through semantic analysis, it was obvious to discover ‘structural genius’ that organized the nature and mechanism of the whole conceptual system consisting Al-Qur’an. It was possible, therefore, for mankind to utilize Al-Qur’an as a path of salvation and happiness during their life in the world. The problem lied on the notion that semantic analysis was not a homogeneous single theory. Each expert had a different views and theories of semantics. Based on the background, the dissertation would carry out critical studies on semantics theories developed by Izutsu along with it the system on Al-Qur’an reading and its implication toward Al-Qur’an studies and interpretation. Applying the historical and hermeneutic method of analysis on Izutsu’s works, it was found that his developed semantics theories bore the result of elaboration between Araya’s awareness theory in Yuishiki’s Budhism and a linguistic and a linguistic theory developed by Edward Sapir, Benjamin Lee Whorf and Leo Weisgerber. Using a semantics analysis, it was recognized that: (i) Al-Qur’an written in Arabic has surely indicated the Arabic Cultural elements in conceptual system of Al-Qur’an, although in many things, Al-Qur’an itself has radically reconstructed that conceptual system so that it was suitable with the new conceptual system offered in Al-Qur’an. (ii) Since the beginning of its revelation, Al-Quran was addressed to all mankind. Although Al-Qur’an was written in Arabic, the fact was just aimed at making communication between the Providence and the Messenger easier including the initial people greeted by the revelation which belonged to Arabic using Arabic language, not aimed at proving that Arabic was the best one among languages in the world. The implication of the fact that Al-Qur’an was a type of revelation greeted all mankind lied in the notion in every Muslim and non-Muslim had a similar right to respond it on condition that they possessed an intelligence to respond toward the revelation not in different position, they seemed to inter-relate each other constructing the world view of Al-Qur’an. It is possible then, to discover the complete worldview of Al-Qur’an through studies and analysis on dominant concepts and lexis without carrying out studies on the whole concept included in Al-Qur’an Keywords: Izutsu Concept. Semantics Analysis, Al-Qur’an
