Abstract

ABSTRACT Language and cultural diversity should not become obstacles for people to communicate with one another. With the existence of language, people are easier to interact, to express themselves, and to give opinions in various forms. To communicate, people can also use the translation process to make an interaction remain intertwined. In the translation process, untranslatability might occur due to differences in cultural backgrounds owned by every language. Untranslatability also causes the message or meaning contained in literary works cannot be conveyed properly by the readers. This leads the researcher to focus on finding the translation method employed by the translator in translating the culturally untranslatable words found in Khaled Hosseini's A Thousand Splendid Suns novel. This research uses qualitative method. The untranslatable cultural words found are analyzed using the cultural word category proposed by Nida and translation method by Vinay and Darbelnet. Only five of the seven procedures by Vinay and Darbelnet are used in this study. Direct translation method dominates this study with the percentage of 86.04%. In this case, the translator chooses to employ some procedures such as borrowing, literal translation, and calque that maintain the cultural words grammatically and structurally from the source language (SL) to the target language (TL) in order to keep the original meaning in those cultural words.
