Abstract

This graduating paper is entitled, “Slang and Social Factors in the Film Camp X-ray". It examines the use of slang in the dialogue of several characters in the film and the social factors that are influenced by the use of slang. This paper is based on qualitative research using the documentation method for data collection and the identity method for the analysis. The research used the American film Camp X-ray as the main data source and the script as the supporting source. This paper uses the theory of “slang linguistic properties”, by Elisa Matiello at the morphological level and semantic level which explains how slang is used. It also uses the theory of “social factors” by Janet Holmes which explains the social background of the use of slang. The researcher found 54instances in the film’s dialogue that contain slang. Twenty of those examples of slang are formed by compounding, conversion, suffixation, extension, partial disorganization, and total disorganization. Examples of the social factors include slang that is used to express hostility, contempt, calmness and peace, patience, and to express admiration, to insult someone, to emphasize statements, and to clarify something.
