Abstract

This study aims to study the empowerment activities of people with disabilities in Argosari village Sedayu Bantul through TBM Helicopter, benefits felt by persons with disabilities and the obstacles faced in the empowerment process. This study uses a qualitative research method with a case study approach. This research subjects consisted of Management of TBM Helicopter, Volunteers of TBM Helicopter, and Members of persons with disabilities TBM Helicopter. The data collection method was carried out through semi-structured interviews, passive participation observation, and documentation. This study uses data analysis techniques Miles and Huberman’s model, consists of data collection, data reductio, display data, and drawing conclusion or verification. While the data validity checking technique was performed using triangulation techniques. The results of this study are 1) empowerment activities for persons with disabilities have two roles, in education literacy and economic. Activities in education in form of sign language classes, reading traveling stories, tutoring “sekolah aku bisa”, and discussions on disability issues, while economic activities in form of food processing and handicraft training activities. 2) Changes felt by perspns with disabilities in improving education improvement, accessibility improvement, action improvement, institutional improvement, business improvement, income improvement, life improvement, and community improvement. 3) The obstacle faced in the empowerment process is the availability of volunteer time, limited number of volunteers as assistants, sources of funds to develop creative economic activities, and difficulties in administrators in providing understanding to disabilities and families of persons with disabilities.
