Abstract

This research aims to determine the description of family strength in couples that was arranged by the cleric. The research method used in this research is a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. The informants in this study were two couples who were matched with the criteria of having a minimum age of 10 years of marriage, and married to an intermediary by cleric. Data collection methods are semi-structured interviews and observations. Furthermore, the data were analyzed through the process of data reduction, coding, categorization, and deduced conclusions. The results of the research are found that the family strength of the couple who was mated by cleric was formulated into three. The first was orientation before marriage, namely, the choice of a life partner for the two informants was left to the cleric. The choice of a life partner for the two informants was also not only oriented towards personal pleasures but the intention to worship Allah, a sense of respect for the Kyai, and also on the basis of sacred considerations, namely wanting to get cleric's blessings in the family. Second, after marriage, family strength is further developed with confidence, extended family support and partner commitment. The third is a problem solving strategy. The four informants resolved family problems by returning all problems to their original intention to marry so that the problems did not drag on, always asking for cleric’s consideration in all matters, and practicing prayers from cleric who was believed to be able to solve the problem.
