Abstract

In the history of Islamic civilization, there is an event known as Hudabiyah Diplomacy (S}ulh} al-H}udaibiyah)). The incident that occurred in the year 6 hijriyah (628) was a negotiation between Suhail bin ̒Amr, one of the leading Quraish diplomats and Rasulullah s}allalla>hu ̒alaihi wa sallama, which later resulted in several controversial agreements, because they were considered to be detrimental to the Muslims. The agreement clauses are: (1) may not perform umrah this year (6 hijriyah). Next year is allowed, with the condition that it is only three days and not carrying a weapon; (2) a ceasefire for ten years; (3) freedom of association with both parties; (4) the followers of Quraish who joined the Prophet s}allalla>hu ̒alaihi wa sallama without the permission of their guardian must be returned, but the Muslims who joined the Quraish were not returned; (5) This agreement is made on the basis of peace, there is no treason. The Muslims were very upset with the outcome of the negotiations because they were considered to be very detrimental to the Prophet s}allalla>hu ̒alaihi wa sallama. Not a few assumed that the negotiations were the momentum for the defeat of the Muslims. The Companions were always overshadowed by the astonishment of the factor that triggered Rasulullah s}allalla>hu ̒alaihi wa sallama to accept the terms of the Quraish; what is the basis of the argument for thinking of Rasulullah s}allalla>hu ̒alaihi wa sallama; what is the rationality structure behind the agreement on the treaty. These questions are interesting to answer through a theory of narrative analysis: Narratological Structuralism. The theory initiated by a French scientist, A. J. Greimas, will position the history of Hudaibiyah Diplomacy as a narrative. Hudaibiyah's narrative will be methodologically analyzed by: (1) identifying each scene in Hudaibiyah's narrative; (2) describe the characters/actants of the scenes: subject, object, destinator, receiver, adjuvant, and traitor; (3) describes the relationships between characters/actors: the axis of desire, the axis of transmission, and the axis of power; (4) examining the consistency, contradiction and value in Hudaibiyah's narrative through the process of identifying the actants and their relations of the actants. The methodological operation of the theory of Narrative Structuralism A. J. Greimas in Hudaibiyah's narrative is intended to analyze the reasoning structure of the Prophet s}allalla>hu ̒alaihi wa sallama behind the clauses of Hudaibiyah Diplomacy. Historical facts will also provide evidence of the success of Rasulullah's thinking s}allalla>hu ̒alaihi wa sallama leap which transcends temporal reasoning, so that the Hudaibiyah Diplomacy event is recognized as the greatest momentum of Islamic victory.
