Abstract

This thesis examines the interaction between the performativity of the Al-Qur’an and the urban Muslim community. It takes the phenomenon of rumah tahfiz that has grown massively in the capital of Jambi. In general, previous studies spot the rumah tahfiz only as an institution for learning Al-Qur’an. This study seeks to see the rumah tahfiz as a change in the trend of Al-Qur’an reception in the landscape of the urban Muslim community in the capital of Jambi. This research contributes to the study of da’wah movement-based Al-Qur’an in the modern world, especially concerning on how the rumah tahfiz is in urban Muslim life and constructs their Islamic identity. Having had area studies as perspective, this study seeks to show the typical characteristics of the urban Muslim community on a regional scale in the capital of Jambi city. By applying the perspective of charismatic leadership and the Muslim middle class, this study elaborates on how agencies work in the context of establishing rumah tahfiz in Jambi City. The research data sourced from interviews with rumah tahfiz owners and online activities on their social media. This study shows the agencies have significant roles in the history and development of rumah tahfizs in the capital of Jambi. The agencies are Muslim middle class. Their dependence on charismatic authority was the initial trigger for its emergence in the society. Some of the agencies were the former followers of Yusuf Mansur. Thus, the initial establishment of the rumah tahfiz in Jambi City was a manifestation of their loyalty to the religious authority. This matter, in turn, has led to the dynamics of the complex development of the rumah tahfiz. When Yusuf Mansur loss authority for many reasons, the agencies had looked for other authorities and impacted on the transfiguration of the rumah tahfiz. This matter also becomes the embryo of the development of independent rumah tahfiz. This thesis also shows the enthusiasts of the rumah tahfiz come from the urban Muslim middle class. They are middle-aged people who come from various professions and most of them formally have a general education background. Their personal issues, such as religious identity, social status, work, environment, are the driving factors for the construction of a rumah tahfiz. Apart from getting religious practices in accordance with urban culture, the rumah tahfiz is also able to answer and be a solution to the issues they are experiencing. Thus, this thesis concludes that on the one hand the rumah tahfiz is historically an expression of piety of the urban Muslim community, but at the same time it also constructs the new religious identity of the agencies.
