Abstract

This study discusses inter-religious communication in resolving conflicts in Mangir Lor Hamlet, Sendangsari Village, Bantul Yogyakarta. The background of this research originated from the phenomenon of inter-religious conflict. The conflict occurred when Hindus had a Piodalan ceremony which was held on Tuesday, September 12, 2019. The Piodalan ceremony is a commemoration of the birth of a Hindu holy place which is held once a year and in its implementation there are various rituals. The activity was deemed not given permission from the surrounding community, so there was a miscommunication which led to a conflict of refusal actions. Thus, it causes communication between religious people to experience problems. Therefore, there is a need for interfaith communication efforts in overcoming conflicts. The purpose of this study was to determine community communication efforts in overcoming these conflicts as well as the results and challenges in overcoming conflicts. This research is a qualitative research with an interpretive paradigm and uses a case study approach. Sources of data are taken from primary sources consisting of religious figures, community leaders and the Muslim and Hindu community. Secondary data sources were obtained from the literature related to the main research problem. Methods of data collection through interviews, observation, and documentation. Meanwhile, data analysis uses data reduction analysis techniques, data presentation, and drawing conclusions and verification to see how communication efforts in overcoming conflicts and their results and challenges. The conclusions in this thesis are, first, the communication efforts of the Islamic community in overcoming conflicts in Mangir Lor Hamlet, including through group communication such as involving Hindus in social activities, being tolerant, and maintaining media ethics. Meanwhile, the communication efforts of Hindus in overcoming conflicts are by personal communication, how to carry out dialogue, being open, collaborating with Muslims and being tolerant and taking care of legal permits in religious activities. Second, the results of inter-religious communication efforts in overcoming conflicts, namely stating social identity, social integration, increasing knowledge, finding solutions, creating supervision, interreligious relations and socialization of cultural values. Meanwhile, the challenges in overcoming conflict are the emergence of hoax news, lack of information about the Piodalan ceremony, alleged feelings of apathy and lack of empathy.
