Abstract

This research discusses the role of Library and Information Assembly (MPI) in Muhammadiyah Islamic organization development. The purpose of this study was to determine the role of MPI in Muhammadiyah Islamic organization development and its relevance to the needs of Muhammadiyah Islamic organization and its strategy in carrying out its duties as a library for Muhammadiyah Islamic organization. The method used is a qualitative method with the type of descriptive research. The subjects in this study were the leadership of Library and Publishing division and librarians and their staff who were involved with library activities at the research location. The formal object of this research is the role of Library and Information Assembly (MPI) in Muhammadiyah Islamic organization development, while the material object is MPI of the Central Leadership of Muhammadiyah. In collecting data, researchers used three techniques, namely interviews, observation, and documentation. Data validation used triangulation and re-checking techniques. Then, the data is reduced and presented in the form of a sentence description for further conclusions to be drawn. The results of this study indicate that the role of MPI is to document ancient and modern archives belonging to Muhammadiyah from 1912 to 1989 through collaboration with the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia (ANRI) and publishing several books since 1996. MPI also supports Muhammadiyah product development research activities and provides collections for meet the information needs, both Muhammadiyah residents and people outside Muhammadiyah. In addition, MPI also held a Muhammadiyah Corner at the Central Library of the University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY). MPI's vision and development program are already relevant to the vision and development program of Muhammadiyah Islamic organization. MPI has also met the criteria for the establishment of a special library based on the 2011 Indonesian National Standard. MPI's obstacle in carrying out its role is inadequate human resources (HR). On the other hand, MPI has a fairly good strategy in carrying out its role as a library for Muhammadiyah Islamic organization so that these obstacles can be overcome, although not optimally. In summary, the first strategy of MPI is to equip library facilities; secondly, increasing the ability to master information technology and publications; and third, developing cooperation in the management of library materials and publications.
