Abstract

The importance of expressing emotions for people with bipolar disorder to reduce stress is something that can affect the behavior or attitude of the individual in making decisions. Expressive writing therapy is one of the therapies which is a writing therapy that functions or can be used to reduce depression or stress tendencies. The benefit of expressive writing therapy is that it helps sufferers understand the emotions they feel. Expressive writing therapy is a form of chatarsis where when the patient is experiencing stress or depresions, the patient can express everything he feels though writing. The purpose of this study is to find out and describe the stages of expressive writing theapy carried out by sufferers to improve the ability to express emotions in people with bipolar disorder in Gunung Ketur Yogyakarta. The research method used in by participant observation, interviews and equipped with documentation. The results of this study are there are four stages carried out in improving the ability to express emotions of people with bipolar disorder, namely the stages of Recognation, Examination, Feedback and Application to the self.
