Abstract

This dissertation explores the survival strategy of RA Al- Washliyah (Islamic Kindergarten affiliated with Al-Washliyah Islamic organization) amidst the mushrooming establishment of Preschool institutions in Asahan Regency. The learning concept offered by Islamic Preschool institutions has served as an important concern in the contestation of Preschool institutions. Despite the proliferation of numerous Preschool institutions established by the government, and non-governmental organizations, the Preschool institutions established by Islamic organizations has a special place in society, which makes it interesting to study the survival strategy of Preschool institutions established by Islamic organizations amidst the development of other Preschool institutions. This dissertation was written based on Talcott Parsons' structural functionalism and Max Weber's theory of authority using qualitative and a phenomenological approach. This research was conducted at some Kindergartens affiliated with Al-Washliyah (RA Al-Washliyah) in Asahan Regency, namely RA Al-Washliyah Kisaran, RA Al-Washliyah Meranti, and RA Al-Washliyah Teluk Dalam. These three Kindergartens are located in three different subdistricts with different regional and cultural backgrounds. This study used primary data sources, derived from school principals, teachers, parents, Muslims and Al-Washliyah administrators, and secondary data, derived from religious leaders and community leaders in Asahan Regency. The data were collected through direct observation, in-depth interviews and documentation. The data were analyzed through the stages of data condensation, data presentation and drawing conclusions/verification. The validity of the data was checked using triangulation techniques and sources. It was revealed that, First, RA Al-Washliyah was able to survive amidst the proliferation of other Preschool institutions in Asahan Regency, as they were supported by four system functions built by the institution. In terms of adaptation, RA Al-Washliyah adapted their learning activities on child development, and learning activities as a way answer community needs and organize adaptive learning based of the times. In terms of goal attainment, RA Al- Washliyah formulated a clear vision, mission, and learning objectives, challenges and adapted children's development, strengthened spiritual-based learning with interesting concepts for children. In terms of integration, RA Al-Washliyah integrated the national Preschool curriculum with the Al-Washliyahan curriculum (curriculum established by Al-Washliyah Islamic organization), manifested in collaborative actions to design additional learning activities with Islamic arts. However, the integration process of RA Al-Washliyah Asahan was still far from optimal due to a lack of coordination with Al-Washliyah Muslim leaders and Al-Washliyah administrators. In terms of latency, RA Al-Washliyah improved learning infrastructure to support children's development potential, participate in community activities by providing religious understanding to the community, and become a charismatic preacher with strong authority. The highlight on religious charismatic authority by the entire academic community of educational institutions is the focal point to attract public interest and win their trust. Second, the learning applied at RA Al-Washliyah served as an effort of Al-Washliyah Islamic organization in introducing the values of Islamic teachings and the values of Al-Washliyah to children from an early age. Al-Washliyah presented religious values by strengthening a spiritual and Al-Washliyah-based learning curriculum, which consisted of introduction to Al-Washliyah organizations, such as history, foundations of faith and worship, and symbols and songs of Al-Washliyah. The learning process was strengthened through memorization programs of several surahs in the Al-Quran, hadith and their translations with hand movements.
