Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic since its emergence at the end of 2019 has brought many changes to aspects of social life. The wheel of mobility that is hampered by the Large-Scale Social Restrictions (PSBB) regulation indirectly increases the use of digital media as a means of preventing Covid-19 transmission. The shift in the use of digital media on a large scale has changed consumption patterns in society which has resulted in a shift in lifestyle. This lifestyle shift has also entered the realm of Islamic boarding schools, including Pondok Pesantren Nurul Ummah Putri Kotagede. This research specifically seeks to highlight the phenomenon of lifestyle shifts that occurred in Islamic boarding schools during the Covid-19 pandemic by using a sociology of religion perspective. To facilitate the flow of research, the lifestyle theory was promoted by David Chaney and collaborated with Jean Baudrillard's consumption society theory. In an effort to examine the phenomenon of lifestyle shifts that occurred during the co-19 pandemic at Pondok Pesantren Nurul Ummah Putri Kotagede. This research applies a qualitative method with descriptive techniques, which in collecting data is taken by semi-structured interviews, observation and documentation. The selection of informants was chosen by applying purposive sampling technique, which consisted of female students, security administrators, lurah, and ustazah (teachers) at Pondok Pesantren Nurul Ummah Putri Kotagede. The data analysis technique used in this study uses the guidelines from Miles and Huberman, which in its stages is divided into four stages starting from data collection, data reduction, data presentation and finally drawing conclusions or verification. Based on this, the results of this study explain. Firstly, the lifestyle shift process that occurs at the Nurul Ummah Putri Kotagede Islamic boarding school can be seen in three quarters of time, namely before the pandemic, during the pandemic, and post-pandemic. The shift process is characterised by changes in the frequency of consumption and the way of dressing, which can be identified from the interests, opinions, and activities of female santri. Second, this lifestyle shift process does not take place naturally, but is supported by internal and external factors that support it. The process of modernisation and digitalisation of leisure consumption is the main factor of lifestyle shifts during the Covid-19 pandemic in female students of Pondok Pesantren Nurul Ummah Putri. Even though they follow the acceleration of the digitalisation era, the female santri do not have selfhood and sensibility. This does not rule out the possibility that female students who apply fashion will become trendsetters in the future.
