Abstract

Sang Kiai is a true story film which tells the struggles of KH. Hasyim Asyari having a dream to liberate Indonesia from colonialism around 1942-1947. This study tries to answer the formulation of the problem which is “How is the description of nationalism in the film of Sang Kiai?” This study uses qualitative approach method, while the theory used is Teun A. van Dijk’s discourse analysis. As for the data collection techniques in this study collected by observation, documentation, and literature study methods. Based on the result of analysis, researcher finds three main conclusions. First, in the analysis of the text of this film there is a nationalism discourse with the topic of bravery of KH. Hasyim Asyari to oppose Japanese, using the Shumubu for national purposes, the statement that there is no contradiction between nationalism and religions, also the call of Jihad Resolution. Second, social cognition is amplified by the mental awareness of film director and producer. Third, social context in the film is adapted to the phenomenon of society, then it becomes an inspiration for the film’s authority to produce Sang Kiai.
