Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze more deeply the symbolic interaction patterns of deaf students and assist them in understanding the material and how deaf students learn when studying online at UIN Sunan Kalijaga. The researcher uses the theory of Symbolic Interactionism from George Herbert Mead which proposes the stages of interaction namely mind, self and society to analyze the patterns of interaction that occur between deaf and deaf volunteers. Researchers used descriptive research with a qualitative approach. Methods of data collection by means of interviews, observation and documentation were carried out on 6 research subjects namely Nadia Kominisie, Dimas Hari Kharisma, Fella Gustian, Lalu Alfian R who is deaf, also Azizul anse and Zidny always volunteers. Barriers in communicating are felt when deaf students have difficulty understanding dense text messages, besides that the educational backgrounds of deaf and deaf volunteers are different, so there are new terms that are sometimes incorrectly conveyed. Another obstacle is signal access and online reading. Because they use online application, technology fully controls this communication and learning process, so that without qualified human resources, this communication will not work properly. The majority of deaf students have a visual learning type to understand a material, they use pictures and writing in learning. So, during the online learning process this is easier to do as long as there are the right sources for them to learn. Some of deaf students have kinesthetic learning types or are more inclined to learn something by practice, this is an obstacle. Social restrictions and distance when learning is bold result in a decrease in the level of understanding of the deaf.
