Abstract

"The weton tradition is a heritage passed down from ancestors. Weton it self can be used in various events such as weddings, tingkeban (baby shower), housewarming, house construction, and others. Knowledge and attitudes regarding weton have an impact on the belief in weton customs used in marriage. This research aims to uncover the knowledge and attitudes of Javanese people who believe in the weton tradition in marriage. The study adopts a qualitative ethnographic approach, with subject selection using purposive sampling and sample size determined through snowball sampling. The research was conducted from January to June 2023. involving three informants who are Javanese and understand and believe in the weton tradition, this is evidenced by the public's trust in informants in dealing with weton problems. The research findings indicate that the knowledge of informants 1 and 2 shares similarities in the learning process about weton, which primarily comes from their family environment, especially from their parents. In contrast, informant 3 learned from others or a teacher. Attitudes towards weton show that informant 1 follows weton values if they consider it appropriate and in line with beneficial values, combined with Islamic teachings. On the other hand, informants 2 and 3 believe in and adhere to the original weton tradition before it underwent acculturation with Islamic teachings."
