Abstract

Pb (II) metals need to be handled carefully because they are extremely hazardous to the environment. In this study, Pb (II) metals were treated using an adsorption technique that makes use of salacca peel charcoal as a biosorbent. The purpose of this work is to understand the properties of the charcoal of salacca peel function group before and after activation, the ideal pH variation and contact time, as well as the isothermal adsorption patterns applied to the adsorption of Pb metals (II). Biosorbens are produced through carbonization and activation. Carbonization is the process of converting salacca peel into carbon through carbonization with a temperature > 300 °C, while activation is the procedure of adding acid activators such as HCl to the active charcoal of salacca peel. The pH variation test is carried out in the range 2–5, because Pb2+ ions are often found in the area. The contact time tests were performed at 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 minutes, while the metal ion concentration variation testing was performed to obtain the adsorption constant. Salacca peel charcoal contains active groups that can be identified through FTIR characterization. The active groups included in this study were -OH, C=C, and C-O with a sequential wave number of 3199.76 cm-1–3202.15 cm-1, 1403.08 cm-1–1435.95 cm-1, and 1190,28 cm-1–1221.63 cm-1. The pH variation test resulted in optimal conditions at pH 4, with an adsorption effectiveness of 85.05%. Optimal conditions for the absorption time of the metal Pb (II) in the 60th minute with an adsorption capacity of 0.7154 mg/g. The isoterm adsorption pattern of this research follows the Langmuir isotherm pattern with a regression value of 0.8278 in the y = 4.3898x + 10.981line equation, so that obtaining an adsorption capacity of 0.2278 mg/g and an energy of 26,767815 kJ/mol. Based on the data obtained, it was concluded that the leather can be used for the adsorption of Pb metal by converting it into charcoal.
