Abstract

The background to the problem of this research is that society's perceptions and views of children with special needs are still relatively negative, there is still a negative stigma in the form of ridicule and exclusion. Society's judgments can influence children's self-confidence and how they judge themselves. Instilling high self-esteem in children is very necessary, including children with special needs. Self-esteem influences their behavior and motivation. By having high self-esteem, a person can evaluate himself objectively so that he can recognize his own strengths and at the same time accept and admit his weaknesses. This research aims to find out, describe and analyze the stages of sharing sessions in instilling self-esteem in students with special needs at SMP Muhammadiyah 9 Yogyakarta. This research is field research using qualitative methods with a total of 6 subjects consisting of 1 guidance and counseling teacher, 1 special assistant teacher, and 4 students with special needs at SMP Muhammadiyah 9 Yogyakarta. Meanwhile, the object of this research is the sharing session stages in instilling self-esteem in students with special needs at SMP Muhammadiyah 9 Yogyakarta. Data collection uses observation, interviews and documentation. The results of this research are that there are 4 stages of group guidance withsharing session to instillself-esteem students, namely the formation stage, transition stage, activity stage, and termination stage. First, the formation stage includes introduction, building good relationships, the stage of self-involvement or the stage of entering oneself into the life of a group. Second, the transition stage includes the atmosphere of activity, the atmosphere of imbalance, the bridge between stage I and stage III and the overall pattern. Third, the activity stage is the core stage of implementing group guidance. Fourth, the final stage includes questions to measure the understanding and ability of group members to apply what was discussed in the group.
