Abstract

Adaptation in teaching and learning interactions between a deaf sign language teacher and hearing students remains a crucial aspect, especially in inclusive educational settings. This qualitative study explores the interactional adaptation between a deaf sign language teacher and hearing students in the Indonesian Sign Language learning environment at the Indonesian Sign Language Center in Yogyakarta. The research delves into the complexities of communication barriers, the impact of diverse sign language interpretations, societal misconceptions, and the need for inclusive policies for individuals with hearing disabilities in Indonesia. Data collection through interviews, observations, and documentation revealed challenges faced by both the teacher and hearing students, emphasizing the necessity of tailored teaching approaches. The study highlights the significance of nonverbal communication and sign language proficiency in fostering effective interactions. Triangulation of data sources ensures the credibility of findings. Understanding and addressing these challenges are vital for creating inclusive educational environments, aligning with Islamic values promoting empathy and support for individuals with hearing disabilities.
